How Much Delta-8 Should I Take? A First-Time Guide
Zen Bliss team ยท October 2026
In short: For a first time, take 5 to 10 mg of Delta-8 THC: a quarter of a 50 mg gummy, or a quarter to half dropper of the 1000 mg oil. Gummies take 30 minutes to two hours to start and last four to eight hours. Wait at least two hours before taking more, and don't drive for the rest of the day.
Why the first time needs care
Delta-8 THC is psychoactive. Most people find it milder than the Delta-9 THC in cannabis, but how it feels depends on how much you take, your body, your tolerance and whether you have eaten. Edibles also take a while to start. The most common first-time mistake is feeling nothing after 45 minutes, taking a second piece, and then feeling both at once.
How much Delta-8 to take the first time
A common first amount is 5 to 10 mg. Start at the low end if you have never used THC, are small-bodied, or are taking it on an empty stomach. Here is what that looks like with each of our products:
| Product | First amount | How to measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Delta-8 THC Gummies, 50 mg | about 12 mg | A quarter of a gummy, cut with a sharp knife |
| Delta-8 THC Oil, 1000 mg | about 4 to 8 mg | A quarter to half dropper (about 5 to 10 drops) |
| Delta-8 THC Oil, 2000 mg | about 4 to 9 mg | 2 to 5 drops, or a quarter dropper |
| Delta-8 THC Gummies, 100 mg | Not a first product | Even a quarter is about 25 mg |
The oil is the easiest way to start small because you can measure a few milligrams at a time. Our Dose Finder suggests a starting amount from your weight and experience.
How long Delta-8 takes to kick in, and how long it lasts
| Format | Starts in | Strongest at | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gummy (through the stomach) | 30 minutes to 2 hours | 2 to 4 hours | 4 to 8 hours |
| Oil held under the tongue | 15 to 45 minutes | 1 to 2 hours | 3 to 6 hours |
A gummy taken with or after a light meal tends to give a steadier start. Oil held under the tongue for a minute starts sooner; swallowed straight away, it behaves more like a gummy.
The two-hour rule
Whatever the format, wait at least two hours before deciding whether you want more. If you feel little or nothing by then, it is safer to try a slightly larger amount next time than to keep adding pieces the same evening. Change one thing at a time, keep the time of day and the food the same, and note what you took and how it felt.
What changes how strong it feels
- Tolerance. Regular use of any THC means you need more for the same effect. A break lets it come back down.
- Food. On an empty stomach, edibles can start faster and feel stronger.
- Your body. Two people can feel the same amount very differently.
- Alcohol and other substances. Alcohol with THC increases impairment. Avoid mixing them.
If you take too much
Too much Delta-8 can bring anxiety, a racing heart, dizziness, nausea or confusion. It is unpleasant, and it passes as the effect wears off.
- Stop taking more, and stay somewhere safe and familiar.
- Sit or lie down, sip water and eat something light.
- Ask someone you trust to stay with you.
- Do not drive or use machinery.
- Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or if someone cannot be woken.
- If a child or pet eats a gummy, call your poison centre or vet straight away.
Safety basics
- For adults of legal age in their province: 18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec and 19 everywhere else.
- Do not drive for the rest of the day after taking Delta-8.
- Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ask a pharmacist first if you take prescription medication.
- Delta-8 will likely show on a drug test (see Will Delta-8 or CBD show up on a drug test?).
- Keep gummies sealed in their pack, out of sight and reach of children and pets.

FAQ
How many mg of Delta-8 does it take to feel it?
Many people feel a light effect at 5 to 10 mg. Some feel it at less, and regular users need more. Start low and wait.
Is 50 mg of Delta-8 a lot?
For a first time, yes. A 50 mg gummy holds several first servings, which is why we suggest starting with a quarter.
How long does a Delta-8 gummy take to kick in?
Usually 30 minutes to two hours, sometimes longer on a full stomach.
How long do Delta-8 gummies last?
Four to eight hours in total, strongest at two to four hours.
Can I take Delta-8 every day?
Regular use builds tolerance, so the same amount feels weaker over time. If you take medication or have health concerns, talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
Should I eat before taking Delta-8?
A light meal or snack beforehand tends to make the start steadier and less sudden.
